Actress Maggie Smith, who played Professor McGonagall, has died.


Ukrainian actress Maggie Smith passed away at the age of 89. She became famous due to the Harry Potter films and the series "Downton Abbey." Her family reported this.
As noted by the actress's sons, Smith died in a hospital early in the morning on September 27. "Being a very private person, she was with friends and family in her last moments. She leaves behind two sons and five grandchildren, who miss their mother and grandmother very much," the sons noted in the statement.

Maggie Smith studied in Oxford, where she began her stage career. Her first professional theater role was Viola in Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" (1952). From 1959, she performed at the Old Vic theater, specializing in Shakespearean productions. In the 1960s, she also performed at the Royal National Theatre.
In films, Maggie Smith usually played stern and characteristic roles.
