Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly expressed her dissatisfaction with statements made by the elected president of the United States regarding Canada's economic weakness and his proposal to make it the 51st state.
During a press conference, Trump reiterated his proposal to turn Canada into the 51st state of the USA, reports the European Truth.
'Canada and the United States, that would really be something. There will be no artificially drawn border, and it will be clear what it looks like, and national security would significantly improve. Don't forget: we are essentially protecting Canada,' he said.
He also stated that the USA subsidizes the Canadian economy and does not need its 'machinery and lumber.'
'The comments of the elected President Trump demonstrate a complete misunderstanding of what makes Canada a strong country. Our economy is strong. Our people are strong. We will never back down in the face of threats,' responded the head of the Canadian Foreign Ministry.
Earlier, Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods and accused Ottawa of failing to address trade and immigration issues.
