An outbreak of bubonic and pneumonic plague has occurred in Congo.

New case of plague in Congo
In the medical-sanitary zone of Reti, located in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), from April 2025, 24 cases of dangerous bubonic and pneumonic plague have been identified. This was reported referring to a statement from the coordinator of the Center for Epidemiological Surveillance and Plague Control in the DRC, Dr. Gustav Lossa.
According to Lossa, the epidemic has spread to four out of 22 districts of Djugu - Lokpa, Kopa, Kpandroma, and Reti. Lossa noted that the transmission of the infection mainly occurs through fleas. The doctor urged to avoid contact with the bodies of the sick, especially the deceased, as infection can be direct.
Currently, measures to contain the spread of the disease are being carried out with the involvement of humanitarian organizations. Organizations 'Malteser' and 'Medeor' provide the necessary medications and care for the sick, while local sanitary services monitor the situation and inform the population.
It is recalled that earlier this year, there was an outbreak of a disease of unknown origin in the area of the town of Basankusu. According to data, over 943 people fell ill, of whom 52 died. Symptoms included fever, chills, headache, and joint pain. The official source of the disease remains unknown.
During a prison escape in the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, inmates burned alive over 160 women. This horrific incident is part of a complex situation in the region.
