An important political event has occurred in Turkey - the arrest of Istanbul's Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is the main opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. This has led to mass protests across the country. People took to the streets despite the ban, and those who stayed home showed their support by banging pots and pans and turning lights on and off in their apartments.
The authorities have called for a ban on any mass gatherings throughout Istanbul province for four days, until March 23. However, protests are taking place in various cities, including Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir.
İmamoğlu is accused of corruption and supporting a terrorist organization. According to media reports, he was arrested after a search of his home related to a corruption investigation. He is currently in police custody. This event has also caused a drop in the value of the Turkish lira.
